"ALCHERINGA" is a popularized English version of an aboriginal expression that is interpreted to mean "in the beginning" or "from all eternity" (Katz). |

- In honor of the thirty-first International Congress of Americanists, Herbert Baldus compiled a critical bibliography on Brazilian ethnology. The 1.785 titles listed therein include all important works published from the discovery of Brazil to 1953. A short description of each title is given in the language of the work and critical comments follow in Portuguese. In 1968 Baldus published a second volume, listing over one thousand works published between 1953 and 1968. It encompasses not only works on Brazilian ethnology but also works concerned with Brazilian linguistics, archaeology and physical anthropology. Both volumes are organized alphabetically by author, and have subject, tribal and author indexes. |

- The BULLETIN primarily dealt with archaeological excavations conducted by members of the museum staff. A main goal was to make known to the academic community some of the important collections of the Logan Museum, while publishing new facts and interpretations concerning interesting and important peoples of the past. These monographs examined European and North African Paleolithic excavations, archaeology of New Mexico and Illinois, primitive methods of working stone and the teaching of anthropology. - BISHOP MUSEUM publications have long been regarded by the scientific world as authoritative works dealing with the history of man and his environment in the Pacific basin. The BULLETIN was initiated in 1922 as the vehicle for publication of research papers summarizing the Museum's Pacific-wide expeditions and field operations. - Twelve quarto volumes were issued containg titles in ethnology, physical anthropology, folklore, zoology, botany, geology and geography. More than half the material in the MEMOIRS concerns Hawaiian featherwork, weaving, stone and wood carving, and kapa (tapa) making. Volumes 4, 5 and 6 deal with the Fornander collection of Hawaiian antiquities, traditions, legends, genealogies and meles (chants). These materials were collected in during the second half of the nineteenth century and the texts were translated in the early years of the twentieth century.
