- From the outset, APPROACH was a magazine for the new writer, a medium of expression for the original and talented beginner unable to find ready publication in the established journals. Few recognized authors appeared in its pages and then only for purposes of example. Among the many authors APPROACH encouraged were George Garrett, William Stafford and Robert Sward. It shunned the dull conformity of the short, negotiable lyric and consistently championed the long poem as a vehicle for the development of true purpose and meaning. It stressed variety in technique and interpretation as it juxtaposed poetry, prose and criticism in a lively and challenging combination of voices. |
