AKTION (1911-1932)

Yrs. 1911-1932 (all publ.). Berlin, 1911-1932. Reprint.
Complete set $ 2,700.-   Single volumes may be available. Please inquire.

- Entirely the creation of Franz Pfemfert, a patron of expressionism, DIE AKTION was a focal point of expressionism with contributions by Gottfried Benn, Franz Blei, George Grosz and Oskar Kokoschka, among others. Strong political undertones were evident during the war years when Pfemfert used the new forms of art and literature as vehicles for anti-war propaganda. With the end of the war, the character of the magazine became entirely political; contributors at this time included such radicals as Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. One of the most important publications of the expressionist movement, as well as a political magazine of the Weimar Republic, DIE AKTION is indispensable to any study of early twentieth century Germany.

- The ALLGEMEINE ZEITSCHRIFT VON DEUTSCHEN FUER DEUTSCHE, which was edited by the philosopher Friedrich Schelling, was to be the vehicle for an 'invisible academy of learning and literature' diffused within the whole of Germany. However, its sphere of influence and its circle of contributors were largely restricted to Bavaria. Philosophical, historical and poetic contributions, along with medieval German studies, were edited here with greater competence than was usual in Schelling's other journals. Among the contributors were C.A. von Eschenmayer, F. Baader, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and J.C. Pfister.

- From the outset, APPROACH was a magazine for the new writer, a medium of expression for the original and talented beginner unable to find ready publication in the established journals. Few recognized authors appeared in its pages and then only for purposes of example. Among the many authors APPROACH encouraged were George Garrett, William Stafford and Robert Sward. It shunned the dull conformity of the short, negotiable lyric and consistently championed the long poem as a vehicle for the development of true purpose and meaning. It stressed variety in technique and interpretation as it juxtaposed poetry, prose and criticism in a lively and challenging combination of voices.

- Published only once, ARKADIA was a yearbook with dramatic, epic and lyric contributions by Austro-Bohemian authors. Its goal was to propagate literary purity. Thus, political, economic and scholarly discussions were completely disregarded. Among the many writers featured were Oskar Baum, Moritz Heimann, Heinrich E. Jacob, Franz Kafka and Heinrich Lautensack.
