More interesting, however, are the contributions on the theory of art, reflecting the process by which early romantic ideas were assimilated.

- The main objective of BEITRAEGE ZUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT is to bridge the gap between research and practice. This was achieved by examining musical performances in the light of the relationships between music and audience, and music and society. The music of all periods is discussed, from the Middle Ages to the present, encompassing virtually all countries. Contents include a series of essays on folk songs and patriotic songs, a report on five recently discovered letters of Richard Wagner, and a compendium of the musical works of Janacek.

BERLINER ALLGEMEINE MUSIKALISCHE ZEITUNG
Vols. 1-7 (all publ.). Berlin, 1824-1830. Reprint. Bound set
Complete set € 980,-
Bound per volume € 160,-

- BERLINER ALLGEMEINE MUSIKALISCHE ZEITUNG was founded by the later well-known music theorist Adolf Bernhard Marx in collaboration with the Berlin music publisher Adolph Martin Schlesinger. The new journal enjoyed an unexpectedly high degree of popularity owing in large part to Marx's editorial style. In contrast to the Leipzig ALLGEMEINE MUSIKALISCHE ZEITUNG, the BAM focused on detailed analyses of works as opposed to reports on individual musical events. Marx's famous analytical articles on Beethoven's works have laid ground to nineteenth-century disputes on form and content in music.

About one-third of the topics are in the field of ethnology, general archaeology, folklore, language, music and religion. - Edited by Noel Stock, Ezra Pound's biographer, EDGE was one of several little magazines devoted to Pound's teachings. Frequent articles on economics appeared, complete with the predictable references to "international usurocracy," and these were juxtaposed with orthodox literary contributions of high quality. Other contributors included Ronald Duncan, Norman Holmes Pearson and Frank Lloyd Wright.

- Founded in 1906 by Max Dessoir (1867-1947). Dessoir's epistemological interest was in the "essential nature" of art. His phenomenologically trained eye was directed not towards specific individual genres but rather, as a matter of principle, towards all the arts. Dessoir ran the ZEITSCHRIFT FUER AESTHETIK UND ALLGEMEINE KUNSTWISSENSCHAFT with international success until it had to be discontinued in 1942 with the 36th volume because of a "shortage of paper". In 1951, the journal was founded again by Heinrich Lützeler (1902-1988). Currently the only German-language periodical that deals with and discusses questions and problems of a General Theory of the Arts.
