- The following editorial statement appeared in the first issue: "We look at CITY LIGHTS JOURNAL as an international annual, taking as our models such literary foci of other decades as Transition, Botteghe Oscure and the continuing New Directions anthologies." The editor, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, is one of the most widely read contemporary poets, and as publisher and editor he helped to shape the growth of the underground culture of the fifties and sixties. Contributors include Alexander Trocchi, Arthur Rimbaud, Allen Ginsberg, William Carlos Williams and Jack Kerouac.
