- STORY published the early work of many of this century's great writers in the 1930s and 1940s. Publication was suspended for most of 1948-1989. The current incarnation, from the publisher of Writer's Digest, remains true to the vision of the original. Works of well-known writers grace the pages. Writers whose names may be unfamiliar but whose work is highly skilled are also represented. Present-day readers can get an idea of how important a role this magazine played in introducing great writers to the public by reading the occasional feature, "A Story Classic," that reprints a work originally published in earlier years. The magazine sponsors a short story writing competition, presenting the winner with the Carson McCullers Prize for the Short Story, named after one of the magazine's notable contributors (Katz).
