- DER ISLAM was founded in 1910 by Carl Heinrich Becker, whose scholarly career was devoted to the establishment of Islamic Studies as a mature scientific field dedicated to historical and cultural research, independent of the then-prevailing field of Oriental philology. The journal he established seeks to pursue similar goals by providing a critical scientific forum for the presentation of research pertaining to the history and culture of the Islamic world in both pre-modern and modern times.
