- Years 1951-1965 published as
JAHRBUCH FUER AESTHETIK UND ALLGEMEINE KUNSTWISSENSCHAFT vols. 1-10.
- General index for N.S. vols. 1-25 included in vol. 25 (1980).
- Founded in 1906 by Max Dessoir (1867-1947). Dessoir's epistemological interest was in the "essential nature" of art. His phenomenologically trained eye was directed not towards specific individual genres but rather, as a matter of principle, towards all the arts. Dessoir ran the ZEITSCHRIFT FUER AESTHETIK UND ALLGEMEINE KUNSTWISSENSCHAFT with international success until it had to be discontinued in 1942 with the 36th volume because of a "shortage of paper". In 1951, the journal was founded again by Heinrich Lützeler (1902-1988). Currently the only German-language periodical that deals with and discusses questions and problems of a General Theory of the Arts.
