- From the outset, APPROACH was a magazine for the new writer, a medium of expression for the original and talented beginner unable to find ready publication in the established journals. Few recognized authors appeared in its pages and then only for purposes of example. Among the many authors APPROACH encouraged were George Garrett, William Stafford and Robert Sward. It shunned the dull conformity of the short, negotiable lyric and consistently championed the long poem as a vehicle for the development of true purpose and meaning. It stressed variety in technique and interpretation as it juxtaposed poetry, prose and criticism in a lively and challenging combination of voices.

- When the quarterly journal SOUTHERN CULTURES was taken over last year by the University of North Carolina (UNC) Press, the new publisher was ready to reach out to an audience outside academe's hallowed halls with columns on food, music, sports and language and a reader-friendly redesign including the liberal use of archival illustrations. But these changes do not mean that the editorial board has lowered its standards. Although it was initially published by Duke University Press, the move to UNC could be considered a homecoming, since the editors are professors in history and sociology there and the magazine is produced under the auspices of UNC's burgeoning Center for the Study of the American South (Library Journal).
