- BISHOP MUSEUM publications have long been regarded by the scientific world as authoritative works dealing with the history of man and his environment in the Pacific basin. The BULLETIN was initiated in 1922 as the vehicle for publication of research papers summarizing the Museum's Pacific-wide expeditions and field operations. Materials relate not only to Hawaii and Polynesia, but also to Melanesia and Micronesia. About one-third of the topics are in the field of ethnology, general archaeology, folklore, language, music and religion. - Twelve quarto volumes were issued containg titles in ethnology, physical anthropology, folklore, zoology, botany, geology and geography. More than half the material in the MEMOIRS concerns Hawaiian featherwork, weaving, stone and wood carving, and kapa (tapa) making. Volumes 4, 5 and 6 deal with the Fornander collection of Hawaiian antiquities, traditions, legends, genealogies and meles (chants). These materials were collected in during the second half of the nineteenth century and the texts were translated in the early years of the twentieth century. When issued (1916-1920) in the vernacular with an English translation, they represented the first apperarance in print of this Hawaiian literature. |
