- A review of both original and critical writing... important for its interest and preoccupation with Irish letters and, more particularly, with the Irish theater. Its long life and its position as spokesman for Irish literature give DUBLIN MAGAZINE the status of an almost 'official organ' for the thought and writing of its country, while its long critical essays and its many bibliographical summaries of Irish writing make it an important source for the study of Irish literature. But there is also more than an adequate collection of original writings in its pages. Critical essays include a series by A.J. Leventhal on modern literature and thought, and others on various subjects by Herbert E. Palmer, Louis Golding, William Butler Yeats, Sean O'Faolain and J.M. Hone (Hoffman).

- THE EDINBURGH REVIEW, OR THE CRITICAL JOURNAL was the preeminent organ of British political and literary criticism in the early 19th century. It is a Scottish magazine that was published from 1802 to 1929, and which contributed to the development of the modern periodical and to modern standards of literary criticism. The Edinburgh Review was founded by Francis Jeffrey, Sydney Smith, and Henry Brougham as a quarterly publication, with Jeffrey as its first and longtime editor. It was intended as an outlet for liberal views in Edinburgh. The magazine soon earned wide esteem for its political and literary criticism, and by 1818 it had attained a circulation of 13,500. Its contributors included the novelist Sir Walter Scott, the essayist William Hazlitt, the historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, the educator Thomas Arnold, and the legal historian Sir James Stephen. The Edinburgh Review's prestige and authority among British periodicals during the 19th century were matched only by that of The Quarterly Review (Encyclopaedia Britannica ).

Under its first editor, Francis Jeffrey, it was a strong supporter of the Whig party and laissez-faire politics, and regularly called for political reform. Its main rival was the Quarterly Review which supported the Tories. The magazine was also noted for its attacks on the Lake Poets, particularly William Wordsworth (Wikipedia.org).
