- Parliament forbade the reporting of its debates until 1771, when it yielded to protests by London newspaper publishers. In 1803 William Cobbett began publishing the Parliamentary Debates, until, in 1812, he sold his interest to his printer, T.C. Hansard. Throughout the nineteenth century, HANSARD'S PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES were neither verbatim nor official, but rather a collection of newspaper and other reports, embodying corrections by the speakers. The DEBATES are essential to a complete understanding of nineteenth-century Britain.

- Writs and orders under the Great Seal addressed by the Sovereign to individuals were folded or closed up and, therefore, known as "letters close". Until Tudor times the Close Rolls contain royal instructions for the performance of various acts, including the observance of treaties, the levying of subsides, and the repair of buildings. Private deeds enrolled for safe custody on the back of the Close Rolls were especially numerous from 1382, and from 1532 such deeds form the entire content of the Roll.
