-Leading scientific mouthpiece of French Orientalism since 1822. The whole spectrum of the specialist subjects dealt with only becomes apparent from the subtitle, extending as far as North Africa and the Arab era of Spain. As the journal of a major academic society, the "Société Asiatique", it was able to publish the latest research reports from expeditions still in progress. Furthermore, even in the last century, the journal had all the existing type-
fonts available, and it therefore contains a plethora of first publications of texts in oriental languages. Even though the emphasis was on exploring the Arab world, this journal is just as important today for sinologists, indologists, turkologists and iranologists as it is for all branches of philology and religious and literary science.

- Since 1890, this distinguished international journal has published articles in English, French and German on traditional Chinese civilization, with emphasis on literature, the arts, and history. The humanities are strongly represented while articles on science, political science, and anthropology are less often published. A book review section and literature reviews are invaluable to scholars of Sinology. T'OUNG PAO is indexed in tools readily available in the United States, and it deserves a place in American libraries for its global perspective (Katz).
