Essential reading for researchers in Spanish and Latin American history. The Casa de Contratación de las Indias was founded in 1503, in response to the enormous opportunities offered by the discoveries of Christopher Columbus. All matters relating to the "Indias" had to pass through this organisation, the subject of this study. The indexes are extensive.

Dr. Ernst Schäfer (1872 - 1946) spent many hours compiling these indexes in the Archivo de Indias (Sevilla), in Simancas (Valladolid), in the Biblioteca Nacional and in the Real Academia de la Historia.

The indexes are crucial for effective use of the "Colección de documentos inéditos, relativos al descubrimiento, conquista y colonización de las posesiones españolas en América y Oceanía" (CODOIN).

The first volume contains an Alphabetical Index of People.

The second volume contains a Subject Index and a Chronological Index, in which he gives us a brief summary of each document and where it came from.
