- SIR GEORGE HOWARD DARWIN, the second son of Charles Darwin, was an astronomer and a pioneering authority on cosmogony, the theory of the origin of the universe. The first four volumes of SCIENTIFIC PAPERS are a collection of Darwin's most important writings. Included in the collection is his monumental work on the harmonic analysis of tidal observations. The fifth volume, published after his death, contains a personal memoir written by his younger brother, Sir Francis Darwin.
